Rabbi Marcia Prager* and Hazzan (Cantor) Jack Kessler** lead our service, which starts at 6:30. We hope you’ll join us for a cozy, joyful, friendly, and moving Shabbat — a special mix of old favorites, some new music, and timely, down-to-earth, brief teachings!
*Marcia Prager is a vibrant Jewish Renewal teacher, storyteller, artist, and therapist. She is Director and Dean of Ordination Programs for ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal, and rabbi for the P’nai Or Jewish Renewal community of Philadelphia PA. A brief biography cannot convey to warmth and spirituality she brings to services she leads. Marcia Prager is a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia where she received Rabbinic ordination and a Master of Hebrew Letters degree in 1989, and a D.Min honoris causa in 2014. In 1990, she also received the personal smicha (rabbinic ordination) of her mentor and teacher, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi z”l, with whom she continued to work closely for more than twenty years. **Jack Kessler has been called a one-man force of nature in Jewish music. (He has also been called the Jewish Sun Ra; and he claims to have been called late for dinner). He sang Jewish liturgical music as a Hazzan (Cantor) for twenty years before he decided that he prefers singing with a band. Jack is musical director, vocalist, and composer-arranger for Klingon Klez, which describes itself as “good old-fashioned, heartwarming, foot-stompin’ fun-for-the-whole family klez/funk fusion from another planet.” He also directs Atzilut, a ten-member ensemble that performs Concerts for Peace, featuring Arab and Jewish musicians in concert together. An excerpt from one review of Azilut proclaims, “Cantor Jack Kessler’s deep, resonant voice, playing against Shaheen’s violin, and the entire ensemble, is amazing!
